Official Release | December 28, 2018

The Texas Legends (8-14) more than doubled the Rio Grande Valley Vipers’ (11-9) second quarter score to rally from behind but were unable to hold onto their lead, falling 101-92 Thursday night in the Valley.

Texas went scoreless for the first two minutes as the Vipers racked up a 10-point tab.  Battling from behind, the Legends used a 15-point effort from their bench to finish the quarter 23-34.  The Legends’ starters came out firing in the second leading the team to 52% shooting.  The visitors doubled the Vipers’ efforts and rallied from a 14-point deficit to lead by five going into the locker room.

The Legends’ outside shooting went cold after the break.  The two teams exchanged baskets, but the Legends maintained control.  RGV pulled within one with seconds left in the third, but Jameel Warney quickly answered to seal the quarter 73-70.  Bruno Caboclo and Gary Payton II opened the fourth with five straight points to give the Vipers their first lead of the half and set the tone for the final quarter.  With a 21-point combined performance from Caboclo and Payton, the Vipers forged a 31-19 fourth and held off the visitors to even the season series at 1-1.

Texas had four players in double-digits, led by Ray Spalding with 16 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists, while Warney, Keith Hornsby, and Daryl Macon grabbed 14 points each.  Warney also added 8 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals, and a block and Hornsby finished with 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 4 steals.  Macon added 2 rebounds, a game-high 8 assists, 3 steals, and a block, and CJ Leslie put up 9 points and led the team with 13 rebounds.

Gary Payton II led the Vipers in scoring (29), rebounds (15), assists (5), and steals (6) while Caboclo added 24 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists, and a game-high 6 blocks.  Isaiah Hartenstein added the third double-double for RGV with 17 points, 14 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 blocks.
