SOUTHAVEN, MS (Jan. 29, 2018) –The Texas Legends (20-12) wrapped up the month of January on a high note, beating the Memphis Hustle (12-20) 117-106 on the road Monday.
The two teams went back and forth through the first half with 15 lead changes. Memphis got the edge at the first buzzer, leading Texas 29-25 behind a 10-point performance from Omari Johnson. Texas took to the boards in the second with Jameel Warney grabbing 4 in 5 minutes of play. Leading the rebounding game 28-20, the Legends went to the locker room up 56-54, a lead they would hold for the remainder of the game.
Memphis stayed close in the third, tying it up five times in the first half. Texas held a two-point lead at the two minute mark but streaked through 8 straight to take the first double-digit lead of the game. Marquis Teague grabbed the first basket of the fourth to cut the lead to seven, but Texas responded with 10 unanswered points. The 17-point deficit proved too much for Memphis as Texas went up 2-0 on the season series.
Johnathan Motley (28 points, 10 rebounds) and Warney (20 points, 10 rebounds) both finished with double-doubles and all five starters grabbed double-digit scores. Donald Sloan added 18 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals while Brandon Ashley tallied 16 points, 5 rebounds. Wade Baldwin IV totaled 15 points, 5 rebounds, 7 assists, and 2 steals.
Johnson led the way for the Hustle with 21 points, 10 rebounds while Marquis Teague added 20 points, 7 assists. Chance Comanche grabbed 19 points, 6 rebounds, and Durand Scott (13 points, 5 rebounds) and Austin Nichols (11 points, 5 rebounds, 3 blocks) rounded out the double-digit scorers for the home team.
