Lakers Strike Before Midnight

The South Bay Lakers (10-9) got off to a hot start to set the tone for a 152-138 win against the Texas Legends (12-9) on New Year’s Eve.  Both teams put up season-high numbers with South Bay paced by Talen Horton-Tucker posting game and career highs on the night.

South Bay shot 71% in the first to take a double-digit lead they would hold through the next two quarters.  The Lakers led by as many as 25 but were up 115-98 going into the final quarter.  Texas streaked through nine unanswered points to cut the gap to eight early in the fourth.  Jaylen Hoard posted 15 points in the final 12 minutes, but Texas was unable to hold the hot shooting Lakers who knocked down 75% outside to tie up the season series 1-1.

Hoard finished with a career-high 31 points to lead the Legends while Dakota Mathias added 29 points, 8 assists.  Antonius Cleveland finished with a double-double of 28 points and a game-high 13 rebounds while adding 3 assists and 3 steals.  Brandon Fields grabbed the team’s other double-double with 22 points, 3 rebounds, and 10 assists.  Josh Reaves rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 points, 4 assists, 4 steals, and 2 blocks.

Texas had a season-low 31 rebounds while South Bay tied an opponent-low 36 rebounds.  Texas shot over 53% on the night but South Bay knocked down nearly 64% and hit 60% from outside.

Seven Lakers finished in double-digits led by Horton-Tucker with game and career highs of 35 points and 10 assists as well as 6 rebounds, 2 steals.  Devontae Cacok added another double-double for the Lakers with 27 points, 10 rebounds off the bench, knocking down 7-of-8 from the free throw and 8-of-10 on the night.
