Lakers Big Three Push Past Legends

The South Bay Lakers (4-7) used a 42-point third quarter to land out of reach of the Texas Legends (5-6) taking a 123-113 victory Wednesday night in El Segundo.

Jameel Warney knocked down the first shot of the game to give Texas their first and only lead. The Lakers responded with a 19-1 run, but Rashad Vaughn put up 13 to bring the Legends within 6 at the first buzzer. Midway throWidgetsugh the second, Keith Hornsby and Donte Ingram knocked down back-to-back threes to pull Texas within one, but South Bay was shooting a relentless 56% to reextend their double-digit advantage leading 62-52 at the half.

South Bay opened the third with a quick 17 points to take a 22-point lead less than four minutes into the half. The gap widened before the fourth, with the Lakers taking their largest lead (+28) of the night. Texas faced a 24-point deficit in the final 12 minutes, and despite the hot shooting of Hornsby (4-of-6 for 13 points) the 33-19 fourth quarter fell short of a comeback for the visitors.

Vaughn led the Legends’ scoring efforts with 20 points off the bench, shooting 4-of-7 from outside. Ray Spalding added a double-double with 13 points, 15 rebounds, 7 assists, and 2 blocks, alongside Warney with 13 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. Hornsby (19 points, 6 rebounds) and Daryl Macon (15 points, 7 assists) rounded out the double-digit scoring for Texas.

South Bay got a boost from three Los Angeles assignees, led by Svi Mykhailiuk with 29 points off of 7-of-9 from outside. Mo Wagner added 21 points, 7 assists, and Isaac Bonga finished with 9 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists. Jemerrio Jones neared a triple-double with 10 points, 14 rebounds, and 9 assists, while Johnathan Williams came off the bench to tally a double-double with 16 points, 11 rebounds.

The Legends will wrap up their four-game California trip with a double-header against the Santa Cruz Warriors this Friday and Saturday night at 9pm CT.
